Figure 1: The 1-D modelling aims at describing the fluxes of N, C, P and Si in a 1-dimensional framework. Several 'modules' that deal with atmospheric, physical, biogeochemical and sediment processes have been implemented. A 1-D model is then created by simply selecting the desired routines.

Figures 2a-c: Thus it is possible to create a simple NPZ model or a complex model that combines unbalanced algal growth with micro- and mesozooplankton grazing and uncoupled DOC-DON-bacterial dynamics. In the example, the chlorophyll concentration as calculated with a simple NPZ model (one phytoplankton group, one zooplankton group, DIN and phosphate), a NPZD model (including detritus) or an NPZD model that includes descriptions of 3 classes of DOM and bacteria is depicted. The physical forcing is the same in all three cases.
Remark that results are quite sensitive to the inclusion of detritus, but not to the inclusion of DOC and bacterial dynamics.
